The Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has said that he is confident that the club can catch the table leaders Barcelona despite trailing them by a massive 11 point even at this early stage in the season. After suffering a number of defeats and draws in the opening few months of the campaign, Real Madrid have fallen 11 points behind their archrivals Barcelona in the table. Higuain, though, believes that the club will be still able to catch Barcelona in the remainder of the season. He has said that his first season at the club is testament to this fact.

Real Madrid were out of the title race in the midway through the season when Gonzalo Higuain first arrived at the club, but a remarkable second half of the season coupled with a collapse for Barcelona meant that they were able to claim an unlikely victory in the league back in the 2006-7 season. The 4-3 victory over Espanyol on the final day of the season also marked the first goal Higuain scored for the club. He has become one of the influential members within the team. He has already scored more goals than the other striker – Karim Benzema – this season. He is hoping that Real Madrid manage to retain the title they won last season.

“There is a long, long way yet to go, you must play against good teams and I have no doubt we have the squad to do it. It seems crazy, but I have no doubts. We are not just depending on ourselves, we need other results to help us, but we have a squad to fight right till the end and we will do that. When I came into the team we were behind the leader, there were less games left and we managed to take the title,” said Gonzalo Higuain.

Real Madrid has defeated Los Angeles Galaxy in a pre season friendly match by a huge margin of 5-1. The Spanish club dominated Galaxy throughout the match. This is the best performance of Madrid in the pre season matches so far. With this win, the Madrid players have sent a clear message to the opposing teams that they are ready to bang the new season. The attitude of the Spanish club was amazing. The Madrid players were aggressive right from the outset. In the second minute of the match, Gonzalo Higuain took Madrid ahead by scoring a brilliant goal. Actually, the credit of the goal should also be given to Angel Di Maria who set up the goal for Higuain.

Maria himself scored the goal in the 9th minute of the match to double the lead of Madrid. However, Galaxy came back in the 23rd minute of the match when David Junior Lopes scored the goal. But, that proved to be the first and last goal scored by Galaxy in the match. The two superstars of Real Madrid i.e. Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema didn’t start the match. Both the players came to play in the second half of the match. On the other hand, Galaxy substituted all its experienced players in the second half including David Beckham, Roy Keane and Landon Donovan.

Ronaldo looked in fine nick and played pretty well after coming on to the ground. He had almost made the score 6-1 in the 86th minute of the match, but, his shot was brilliantly cleared by one of the Galaxy defenders. The stadium was jam packed for this high profile encounter and 30,317 people saw the match. Real Madrid will play its second match on the US tour against Santos Laguna.

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has said that Real Madrid coach José Mourinho is by far the best manager he has come across in his career. Gonzalo Higuain has come out with this statement, despite the fact that he is not a regular starter for Real Madrid.

José Mourinho has been using French striker Karim Benzema for most of the matches this season. Still, Gonzalo Higuain has said that he finds José Mourinho to be a great motivator and someone who brings out the best from the players at all times. Real Madrid have been overshadowed by the exploits of Barcelona in recent seasons, but they have been extremely brilliant.

Real Madrid currently have a five-point advantage over Barcelona in the league, and they are certainly the favourites to lift the first title since 2007. The Argentine Higuain has come out in praise of the Portuguese coach after the 2-1 win over Mallorca on Saturday. Their victory meant that they kept the five-point advantage at the top of the table. Now, they can relax and watch Barcelona play their game in hand, which would give them the opportunity to close down the gap further. Real Madrid were in danger of losing the match at half-time, but the brilliance of José Mourinho showed at this stage according to Higuain.

“What the coach tells us in the dressing room stays there. Mourinho is a natural motivator and it shows on the pitch. We gave our all after half-time due to things turning out badly for us in the first half. Thank God we managed to win. We knew the match would be complicated and that we would face a Mallorca side different to last year’s,” Higuain was quoted as saying on the official website of Real Madrid.

It Wasn’t a Penalty

There has been a lot of debate over whether Gonzalo Higuain handled the ball or not in the match against Valencia, with the Spanish newspapers taking sides depending on whether they are based in Madrid or not! The match ended 3-2 in favour of Real Madrid and there has been a lot of talk that Real shouldn’t have got the victory. Gonzalo Higuain is thought to have handled the ball in the penalty area, but the referee decided not to give a penalty.

It has provoked angry responses across the Spanish media demanding that the Real Madrid coach should come out with an apology. However, predictably, Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has said that he believes that Gonzalo Higuain did not handle the ball and that it was therefore not a legitimate penalty.

Speaking to the press ahead of the match against Dinamo Zagreb, José Mourinho said, “I have nothing to say about it – for me its very clear. Some of the press might have doubts, but I don’t.” Speaking of his celebrations when the club scored their third, and Mourinho rode substitute Callejon like a horse, Mourinho was more apologetic. “You don’t normally celebrate like that in matches, but when you play against teams like Valencia…”

Real Madrid are up against a Dinamo Zagreb that will definitely want to play for some kind of pride in the Champions League group stage match on Wednesday. So far, Dinamo Zagreb are the only team left in the group to have not taken a single point in any of the matches, and they want to avoid the ultimate embarrassment.

Real Madrid, however, won’t care too much about the result of the match given that they have already qualified in style for the knockout stages of the Champions League. They have a massive seven point advantage over second placed opponents Ajax. Madrid will more than likely be fielding an under strength side given that they have also the League, which they lead Barcelona by three points, to concentrate upon.
